Cichanoŭskaja: EU unlikely to change stance on Łukašenka amid reprisals
May 1, Pozirk. The European Union is unlikely to change its position towards Alaksandar Łukašenka as long as politically-motivated reprisals in Belarus continue, opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has told the 5th Conference of Belarusian Diaspora in Warsaw.
All exiled Belarusians should be able to return home without fear of being persecuted, she added. The EU does not perceive Łukašenka as a legitimate representative of the Belarusian people, the politician said, referring to her conversations with government officials from Germany and France.
Rumors that some countries are considering improving relations with Minsk are a “maneuver by the regime” aimed at confusing the opposition and fostering a sense of uncertainty among its European partners, Cichanoŭskaja stressed.
While Belarus depends on the current geopolitical situation, including tensions in the Middle East, the energy crisis is unlikely to prompt a shift in Europe’s stance toward Minsk, she added. The opposition leader also pledged to do everything possible to ensure that this position remains unchanged until genuine changes take place in Belarus.
