Opposition man suggests trade embargo to make Łukašenka feel nuclear costs
June 29, BPN. Belarusian opposition politician Pavieł Łatuška has called on the West to impose a trade embargo on the Belarusian government and bring Alaksandr Łukašenka to justice, in a video released today.
Thise comes in the wake of claims that Russia has delivered tactical nuclear warheads to Belarus.
Łukašenka must realize how expensive it would be to host the weapons, Łatuška said.
He said the West was too passive and failed to realize that the depolyment “endangers the existence of our independent state.”
He described Łukašenka as Russia’s “Gauleiter,” a Nazi regional leader rejecting Belarus’ independence.
“If Putin will need full control over Belarus, Łukašenka is no longer an obstacle. After all, he has fulfilled all the Kremlin’s wishes,” he said.
Putin claimed today that part of the nuclear arsenal intended for Belarus had been deployed in the country.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the bloc saw no change in Russian nuclear deployments requiring a change in its nuclear posture. “We will monitor closely what they are doing and remain vigilant,” he added.
The United States and its allies have already imposed sanctions on Belarus because they disagree with how the government there treats its people and its neighbors.
Łatuška didn’t specify how heavy the proposed embargo should be and what sectors of the economy it would shake.
