Uncontrolled weapons supplies cause regional destabilization – senior diplomat

April 11, BPN. Uncontrolled weapons supplies feed modern armed conflicts, Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Juryj Ambrazievič told the UN Security Council on April 10.

The “destabilizing accumulation of arms” is a direct way towards militarization of regions, military imbalance and escalation of tensions, the foreign ministry’s press office reported citing the official.

Strict compliance with export control obligations as well as a ban on arms transfers to conflict zones are necessary to minimize the risks of illicit arms trafficking, he added.

Belarus has legitimate concerns linked to NATO arms supplies to Ukraine and the subsequent spread of weapons across the region and their falling into the hands of non-state and terrorist structures, Ambrazievič stressed.

The diplomat’s statements came amid authorities’ support of Russia’s war on Ukraine, re-equipment of the Belarusian army with Russian weapons, and Russia’s nuclear plans in Belarus.
