Exiled politician Labiedźka’s son free on completing his prison sentence

July 23, Pozirk. Belarusian authorities released Arciom Labiedźka, the son of prominent exiled opposition politician Anatol Labiedźka who broke the news on Facebook.

Labiedźka Jr., 40, and his family live in Belarus. In 2023, he was given a three-and-a-half-year prison term on extremism-related charges for allegedly using a bank account and a Facebook service to donate funds to opposition groups or media blacklisted in Belarus.

The Viasna Human Rights Center and a source who wished to remain anonymous confirmed that he was released earlier this month.

His father Anatol Labiedźka is a former chairman of the United Civic Party (UCP) who now advises Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja on constitutional reform and parliamentary cooperation. He faces high treason and other serious charges in Belarus over his political activities.
