Latvia’s railroad company says it needs Belarus-made spare parts
May 6, Pozirk. Latvia’s AS Pasažieru vilciens railway passenger service company urged MPs to make an exception in a bill banning the procurement of goods and services of Russian and Belarusian origin, Tvnet reported.
The company argued that it needs spare parts for its Soviet-made electric and diesel train fleet, which are not produced in the European Union. Railcars cannot be modified as the move would affect their safe operation, it added.
Legislation banning public procurement of goods and services from Belarus and Russia may enter into force in January 2025 if approved, lsm.lv reported on April 18.
MPs from the National Alliance party, who earlier wanted to ban vehicles with Belarusian license plates, drafted the bill.
In early March, Latvia banned imports of vegetables, fruit and other agricultural products from Russia and Belarus.
