Reporter faces criminal charges after jail term

July 28, BPN. Journalist Ihar Karniej has been transferred to a pre-trial detention center after serving a 10-day jail term, his daughter Palina said on social media.

Authorities did not disclose criminal charges against him. It is unclear whether his recent jail term was linked to criminal or minor offence charges.

The journalist has been under arrest since July 17, after police searched his apartment and seized office equipment.

Karniej, 55, used to work for independent media outlets, most recently for the Belarusian and Russian services of RFE/RL. He is a father of four.

At least 36 media workers are behind bars in Belarus, according to the Belarusian Association of Journalists.
