New head of EU delegation presents credentials at foreign ministry

July 14, BPN. Steen Nørlov, the new head of the European Union delegation to Belarus, presented his credentials at the foreign ministry in Minsk yesterday.

“Bringing more than 25 years of diplomatic experience to the table and thankful to Belarus for the welcome I look forward to working with Belarusians in and out of the government for a common future in a safe, sovereign, democratic and prosperous Europe,” the diplomat said on the mission’s Facebook page.

Nørlov will replace Evelina Schulz as chargé d’affaires of the EU to Belarus, the EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced on April 20.

Schulz headed the EU Delegation in Minsk after EU Ambassador Dirk Schuebel left his post in 2021 because of Belarusian authorities’ refusal to extend his visa and accreditation.

Nørlov had previously worked at the Council of Europe coordinating EU cooperation with Ukraine and served as the Deputy Head of Mission at the Danish Embassy to Russia.

He headed the Council of Europe secretary general’s directorate of program coordination in Ukraine and served as deputy head of the Danish diplomatic mission in Russia.
