Opposition politician praises joint appeal of Belarus’ western neighbors to NATO
July 9, BPN. The joint letter of the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg may help the West to work out a strategy on Belarus, said Pavieł Łatuška of the opposition transition cabinet.
The strategy should be developed together with the Belarusian opposition and focus on holding Alaksandar Łukašenka’s regime accountable for its crimes as well as protecting the independence of Belarus from Russia, he noted.
The letter outlines key issues regularly raised at international meetings by Belarusian opposition, among them Łukašenka’s cooperation with Russia, his complicity in Russia’s war on Ukraine and threats to the entire region, Łatuška added.
The letter also reflects the common position of several exiled Belarusian opposition groups that are striving for an EU strategy for Belarus to counter threats posed by the Łukašenka regime and Russia, the politician said.
“We need a common proactive strategy and strong allies in our neighboring countries to restore our independence and promote the democratic aspirations of Belarusian society,” Łatuška said referring to the joint letter as a clear message in support of Belarus’ sovereignty.
