Babaryka back at Navapołack prison – BelPol

July 8, BPN. Jailed regime critic Viktar Babaryka is held in the internal prison at Navapołack Penal Colony No 1 in the Viciebsk region, BelPol resistance group, formerly known as ByPol, reports.

“His health is satisfactory and he is recovering from his injuries,” it said. The prison authorities are reportedly treating him well fearing public information campaigns in his support.

The interior ministry failed to identify the sources of the earlier leaks about Babaryka’s “serious injuries” among the penal colony staff and inmates, BelPol said.

Babaryka’s whereabouts remained unclear since late April when a worker rights group reported his hospitalization with signs of beating and a collapsed lung.

In June, the state-run media announced that Babaryka was expected to testify at the trial of his son Eduard as a witness, but he did not appear in court.

Sources said that he was in serious condition in hospital.

In 2021, authorities sentenced the former presidential hopeful to 14 years in prison on corruption charges, which he denied.
