Ukraine: Wagner Group may use Belarus as logistics hub
July 4, BPN. A Ukrainian defense official believes it is too early to conclude that the whole Wagner Group and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin will be based in Belarus, saying that the media buzz suggesting otherwise is mostly a show of compliance with the agreements reached.
“As for Prigozhin in Belarus, it is clear that he will be visiting it. They can talk about moving the legal address to Belarus and using it as a logistics hub for a possible deployment to other theaters and possibly other continents,” Andrii Yusov said on Ukrainian television.
A long-standing feud between Prigozhin and Russia’s military brass resulted in his mercenaries taking over a military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don and marching on Moscow last month.
Official reports suggest that Alaksandr Łukašenka brokered a deal allowing the Wagner boss to go into exile in Belarus because he eventually called off the uprising. The Kremlin said he will not be prosecuted.
The Belarusian strongman confirmed his arrival in the country on June 27.
There are no reports of Wagner Group mercenaries regrouping and relocating to Belarus “in a systematic way,” Yusov said last month.
But the general headquarters has ruled that Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi and Joint Forces Commander Serhiy Nayev should implement a set of measures to reinforce Ukraine’s northern areas, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
