May 7, BPN. “Challenging a tyrant has always been risky,” Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has tweeted on the 24th anniversary of the disappearance of prominent opposition politician Yuryj Zacharanka.

“He [Zacharanka] was probably murdered by the regime,” she said. “We need justice for the victims of three decades of killings and torture continuing to this day.”

Zacharanka was kidnapped near his Minsk home on May 7, 1999. From 1994 to 1995, he served as the interior minister and was later known for opposing Alaksandr Łukašenka.
