Lithuanian leader: Russia tries to destabilize region with Belarus nuclear plan

April 7, BPN. Russia’s plan to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus is another way to intimidate and destabilize the region, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda told journalists in Alytus on April 6, as quoted by Delfi.

“I really don’t think these threats have any basis and it really can be done. But I repeat: we must pay great attention to our security,” Nausėda said. He said Russia’s rhetoric and actions are becoming a strong argument to demand more attention from NATO to its eastern flank.

On April 4, speaking about the prospect of Russia using its nuclear weapons, an advisor to Nausėda said this was possible.

“Such a weapon was already used in the Second World War, and, in theory, it cannot be ruled out that it could be used again. Again, with that in mind, everything must be done to ensure that it is not used,” Asta Skaisgirytė said.
