Opposition welcomes release of several political prisoners

July 3, Pozirk. The United Transitional Cabinet’s social care representative, Volha Harbunova, has called the new law “On Amnesty” a demonstration of the will to humanity.
Commenting on today’s release of at least five political prisoners, which was reportedly based on that law, she said socio-medical criteria should be equal for all people regardless of their political views.
“The humanitarian step we see today is very important for the people in need of help and the families who have waited so long and supported their loved ones in this challenge. It is also hope for all other political prisoners in need of help,” she said.
Harbunova hoped for the swift return of all prisoners in critical condition, with disabilities and cancer.
She warned against irresponsible and inaccurate interpretations of the amnesty. She also warned against politicizing “humanitarian missions” and using them against the life and freedom of people.
Yesterday, Alaksandar Łukašenka announced the release of his critically ill opponents. On the same day, he signed the amnesty law dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Belarus’ liberation from the Nazis. The law does not apply to prisoners on the extremism register.
However, human rights defenders have confirmed the release of five political prisoners under the amnesty, including Belarusian Popular Front leader Ryhor Kastusioŭ. The names of two women and two men have not been disclosed so far.
