Minsk to tighten control over central bank

March 28, Pozirk. Alaksandar Łukašenka has announced tighter control over the National Bank as Belarus’ financial and other sectors remain under Western sanctions.
“The National Bank cannot be outside our control,” he told central bank governor Pavieł Kałłaur today in Minsk.
The deputy head of the Presidential Administration, Alaksandar Jahoraŭ, and the State Control Committee will oversee the regulator, Łukašenka said.
He added that he personally controls the central bank, but the new measures will not mean interfering in the regulator’s work.
The Belarusian strongman praised the central bank and the government for managing the country’s economy under “pressure from unfriendly Western states.”
Central bank’s net foreign-currency assets up 3.25 percent in January
