Prominent Belarusian activist rearrested instead of planned release – wife
July 11, BPN. Law enforcers in Belarus have rearrested opposition activist Źmicier Daškievič after he was formally freed today, on suspicion of defying the penal colony administration’s orders, according to his wife Nasta Daškievič. He may face another year in prison, she has said on Facebook.
A Minsk judge sentenced the husband to 18 months in prison and the wife to three years of restricted freedom, a form of home confinement, in July 2022 for allegedly taking part in a demonstration against electoral fraud two years earlier.
That was the third politically-motivated jail term for Źmicier Daškievič, a former head of the Małady Front patriotic youth organization, according to human rights groups. While the activist was in pre-trial detention, Nasta Daškievič gave birth to their fourth child.
“I don’t know what to say to my children who have been waiting for their father at home since the early morning,” Nasta said on Facebook.
