Prosecutor demands 10 years’ prison sentence for Babaryka’s son

June 28, BPN. The prosecutor at a Minsk trial has requested that the son of a former presidential hopeful be sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges denounced by rights activists as politically motivated.

According to the Viasna Human Rights Center, a judge will read the verdict to Eduard Babaryka on July 5.

State Control Committee officers arrested him and his father, Viktar Babaryka, in June 2020.

The Minsk Regional Court began hearing the case against him a month ago. Eduard is accused of corruption, staging mass riots and incitement to hatred. Human rights activists said he could face up to 20 years in prison.

The Supreme Court sentenced Viktar Babaryka to 14 years in prison on corruption charges, which he denied, in July 2021. His whereabouts have been unknown for two months.
