Ukrainian intelligence: no reports of Wagner Group deployment in Belarus
June 26, BPN. There are no reports of Wagner Group mercenaries regrouping and relocating to Belarus “in a systematic way,” a spokesman for the Ukrainian defense ministry’s intelligence department said on television, according to RBK-Ukraina.
Andrii Yusov said “we should wait” before drawing final conclusions from the situation, and called statements about the supposed regrouping “political.”
This comes after Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja expressed concern over the possible arrival of Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and his allies in her country. That would be a threat to the European Union, not only to Belarus, she said.
A long-standing feud between Prigozhin and Russia’s military brass resulted in the takeover of a military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don by his mercenaries and their march on Moscow over the weekend.
Official reports suggest that Alaksandr Łukašenka has brokered a deal that allows the Wagner boss to go into exile in Belarus because he called off the uprising. The Kremlin said he will not face criminal prosecution.
Ukraine’s Joint Forces Commander Serhiy Nayev said an attempt to attack Ukraine from Belarus would be suicide for the mercenaries.
