Constitutional referendum to be held in the second half of February, Lukašenka says

December 24. Constitutional referendum would be held in the second half of February, Aliaksandr Lukašenka said at a meeting with the members of the commission and the working group on the amendments to the Basic Law.

“After a period of discussion of the draft of this Constitution, we will meet again in a working group format to see what significant and fundamental proposals would be made by the people,” Lukašenka said.

According to him, a meeting of the constitutional commission would follow to review the results of the working group’s activities, approve them, and submit the draft Constitution to a referendum.

On March 16, Lukašenka signed a decree on the
establishment of a commission to prepare amendments to the Constitution. The
commission, headed by the Chair of the Constitutional Court Piotr Miklaševič,
included 36 people from various fields. Speakers of the House of
Representatives Uladzimir Andrejčanka and the Council of the Republic Natallia
Kačanava were appointed Miklaševič’s deputies.
