October 9, Pozirk. Belarus’ pro-democracy leader Sviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has appointed volunteer coordinator Vieranika Stankievič as the United Transitional Cabinet’s representative for social policy.

Julija Mickievič has been appointed as Cichanoŭskaja’s advisor on inclusivity and equality and Stanisłaŭ Sałaviej as advisor on healthcare.

Vieranika Stankievič was nominated by the Coalition of Łatuška and Movement for Freedom, the largest political group within the opposition Coordination Council, and selected from a list of three candidates on October 8.

The 30-year-old Stankievič is a coordinator for Volnyja, a volunteer network that supports victims of politically-motivated persecution in Belarus. In April, the Committee for State Security (KGB) designated the initiative as an “extremist group.”

In a message on her Telegram channel, Cichanoŭskaja says that Stankievič’s experience of helping victims of repression is very important for her position, which is “about supporting those who have found themselves in a difficult situation and need help.”

The previous social policy chief, Volha Zazulinskaja, currently heads Belarusian pro-democracy forces’ office in Kyiv. Julija Mickievič deputized for her after her departure on August 9.

Mickievič is a gender expert and founder of FemGroup Belarus, who has advocated for gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights for 25 years. Sałaviej is a medical doctor specializing in gynecology and oncology who formerly served as the cabinet’s deputy representative for social policy.

The advisors provide analysis and recommendations and draft reform proposals for the Office of Sviatłana Cichanoŭskaja.
