Police in Baranavičy trained to suppress protests

September 4, Pozirk. Yesterday, police were trained to suppress street protests in Baranavičy, Brest region, the local police authorities reported.

Law enforcers trained in “containing aggressive groups and detaining violators,” said Siarhiej Bialkievič of the Brest Regional Executive Committee’s internal affairs department.

Earlier this year, police conducted similar exercises in Brest, Viciebsk, Maholoŭ, the Hrodna and Minsk regions.

A major drill involving internal troops and elite police units is taking place in northern Belarus. Participants are trained to repel a mock attack on the ministry’s leadership and repel an attack by mock criminals attempting to cross the state border into Belarus in all-terrain vehicles.

Police stepped up anti-riot and other drills after the 2020 post-election protests. Although demonstrations were largely peaceful, police used brutal force to disperse and arrest participants. Several protesters were killed, but their deaths have not been investigated.
