August 20, Pozirk. A court in Belarus declared Technalohija, a Minsk-based publisher of Belarusian-language books that terminated operations earlier this year amid a police crackdown, an extremist organization two months ago. The interior ministry added the publisher to its list of extremist groups on August 20.

Technalohija was established in 1988.

On February 17 and 18, police in Minsk raided apartments and offices linked to book publishers and distributors, arresting about 10 people, including Vacłaŭ Bahdanovič, Aleś Jaŭdacha and Dźmitryj Kołas. Bahdanovič, a former director of Technalohija, was arrested along with his wife and two daughters. On March 25, Naša Niva reported the arrest of Dźmitryj Sańko, Technalohija’s 75-year-old chief editor. All were later released.

On February 21, Technalohija announced on Facebook its decision to terminate operations without specifying any reasons.

Many publishers of books in Belarusian have lost their licenses, including Medisont, Halijafy, Limaryjus, Knihazbor and Januškievič. Some of these publishers continue operations in exile.

The Belarusian government routinely uses extremist and terrorist designations to fight dissent. The list of extremist organizations contains 415 entries and 377 entities, including free media outlets, nonprofits and schools.
