Thunderstorms cause extensive damage across Belarus, child injured
August 7, Pozirk. Thunderstorms with wind gusts of up to 29 meters per second caused damage in 57 settlements across Belarus, with the Homiel region the hardest hit, the emergency situations ministry’s press office reports.
A tree that fell on a tourist hut at a campsite in the Minsk region’s Vilejka district injured an eight-year -old child who was hospitalized.
As of this morning, 280 settlements in the Minsk region were still without power, with Biełenierha crews restoring electricity to a quarter of them by 11 a.m.
Severe weather conditions damaged the roofs of 12 residential buildings and six farms in the Viciebsk region, while in the Hrodna region, 44 residential buildings were damaged.
Rescue workers also responded to 280 incidents involving fallen trees across Belarus. In the Maładziečna district of the Minsk region, two trains were delayed after trees fell onto the tracks.
The forestry ministry reported extensive forest damage, with the Vilejka district and the Žłobin district in the Homiel region among the hardest hit. A total of about 350 hectares of forest in the two districts will require sanitary clear-cutting, the ministry said.
