Russia brands Belarusian hacktivist group “extremist”
July 21, Pozirk. The Supreme Court of Russia has designated a Belarusian hacktivist group called Cyberpartisans and its partner Silent Crow as “extremist organizations.”
The two groups allegedly carry out joint cyberattacks to destabilize the social and political situation in Russia and Belarus and overthrow their constitutional order.
According to Russia’s Interfax, the Court’s ruling pays particular attention to Cyberpartisans, citing its links to the Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment, a Belarusian volunteer force in the Ukrainian army, and alleged “affiliation with the information and psychological operations unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”
The Court blames the two groups for breaches of the IT infrastructure of Russia’s air carrier Aeroflot, Rostelecom databases, the Russian Federal Service for State Registration (Rosreestr), as well as servers of the Belarusian Railways.
Cyberpartisans is a group of anonymous hackers founded during 2020 post-election protests in Belarus. It is known for cyberattacks on Belarusian government and security agencies and propaganda outlets, resulting in leaks of sensitive and classified information.
