Authorities auction off imprisoned activist’s office in downtown Minsk

October 11, Pozirk. Authorities have sold at auction an office of about 31 square meters in central Minsk seized from Eduard Babaryka, jailed son of former presidential hopeful Viktar Babaryka, e-auction.by says.
The premises on the ground floor were reportedly sold for 155,445 rubels (about $47,000).
In August, authorities also sold the man’s Suzuki motorcycle and Mercedes-Benz.
Before his arrest in June 2020, Eduard led the group collecting nomination signatures for his father. He was also in charge of the crowdfunding platforms Ulej and MolaMola.
In July 2023, the Minsk Regional Court sentenced Babaryka Jr. to eight years in prison on charges of tax evasion, public disorder and inciting hatred widely seen as politically motivated. One year later, he was given two additional years behind bars after a judge found him guilty of malicious disobedience to prison authorities.
His father is serving a 14-year sentence after being convicted of corruption. The sentence is also seen as politically motivated because he was arrested as his presidential campaign was gaining momentum.
