Łukašenka to meet Brazil’s president at BRICS summit in Russia

September 7, Pozirk. Alaksandar Łukašenka has announced his upcoming meeting with Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at BRICS summit scheduled for October 22-24 in Russia’s Kazan, according to his congratulatory message on Brazil’s Independence Day.
The Belarusian ruler was confident that the meeting would help Belarus and Brazil to expand bilateral cooperation.
Belarus is committed to the peaceful settlement of conflicts and appreciates the initiatives of Brazil to help build a fairer world, his message said, noting that Brazil’s G20 chairmanship will help reshape global governance.
Brazil is a major importer of Belarusian potash fertilizers. Last year, some European Union countries reportedly lobbied for lifting sanctions against Belarusian potash in the interest of Brazil.
BRICS was formed in 2009 as an informal platform to oppose the Western-dominated world order. The founders were Brazil, China, India and Russia, with South Africa joining in 2010.
Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates officially joined BRICS in early 2024. Argentina declined the official invitation after Javier Milei was elected president in December 2023.
Belarus applied for membership in May 2023.
