Armenia arrests Belarusian said to face politically-motivated persecution in her country

September 2, Pozirk. Police in Armenia have arrested Dzijana Maisiejenka at the request of the Belarusian authorities.
The woman is wanted in Belarus on politically-motivated charges of violent disorder in connection with her participation in peaceful protests, said Aleś Michalevič, a Belarusian lawyer based in the Czech Republic.
She is held at the police station in Noemberyan pending an extradition hearing.
“I think that we will be able to defend Dzijana’s rights and secure Armenia’s refusal to extradite her,” Michalevič said.
Belarusian and local human rights activists this year had already prevented the extradition of at least two Belarusians wanted on politically-motivated charges.
