Opposition leader on Baltic Way anniversary: fight for freedom continues

August 23, Pozirk. Belarusians continue to fight for their right to freedom and independence like two million people from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia did 35 years ago when they joined the Baltic Way peaceful protests against the Soviet rule, Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has said.
Her congratulatory message stressed the importance of achieving freedom, which “requires courage, solidarity and faith in the future.”
“We learn from you to stand shoulder to shoulder, with hope in our hearts and determination in our souls,” the politician said. “May our peoples be always together in the pursuit of freedom, justice and dignity.”
The Baltic Way on August 23, 1989 marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, when the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany divided the spheres of influence in Eastern Europe. Victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes are commemorated on this day in the European Union.
