\u0141uka\u0161enka boasts of meeting security heads of \u201cleading countries\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To impress the audience, \u0141uka\u0161enka pretended to be more informed than everyone else present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trick dates back to the beginning of his political career, when he made his famous anti-corruption report at the age of 30. At the time, \u0141uka\u0161enka acted as if he knew much more than he could say publicly about officials\u2019 corrupt practices. The technique gives him an air of significance and mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 14, \u0141uka\u0161enka excelled in putting on airs, “I recently spoke with your colleagues from all the leading countries – the heads of intelligence services. I asked them a direct question . . . .”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that moment he probably believed what he was saying. Make-believe is a technique he routinely uses to capture audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2019, speaking to students at a Minsk school, \u0141uka\u0161enka said that Ilon Musk presented him with a Tesla vehicle. He was caught lying as Musk denied the claim in his tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus faces international isolation with “leading countries” not recognizing \u0141uka\u0161enka as its president. His claim that the spy chiefs met with him is hardly credible in these circumstances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka wonders why West does not differentiate between Minsk and Moscow<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the meeting, \u0141uka\u0161enka mechanically repeated the talking points he has used in the last three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He blamed the West for all the world’s misfortunes and cast it as Belarus’ chief enemy. “As I am informed, maybe you have different information, one of the main tasks of the intelligence services of NATO and its allies is to disintegrate the post-Soviet space. They want first to drive a wedge into our centuries-old good-neighborly relations and then pit us against each other.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler urged the CIS countries to rally round Russia to resist the enemy’s plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But his remark, “maybe you have different information,” suggests that he may be aware that other countries\u2019 intelligence chiefs may have different assessments of Russia’s confrontation with Ukraine and the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While declaring his unconditional support for Russia, \u0141uka\u0161enka pretended he was surprised that the West makes no distinction between Minsk and Moscow. “It is OK, they [the West] are against Russia – because of Ukraine or something else . . . . What do we owe them? What do we owe NATO? We are quiet and peaceful and mind our own business.” That thinly veiled attempt to distance himself from Russia was very significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was talking out of both sides of his mouth, saying that he is together with Russia, but on the other hand saying he does not want to be held accountable together with Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KGB: Enemies targeting Belarusian elections<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He also seized the opportunity to send a message to the internal audience, presenting Belarus is a fortress besieged by enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We see the activity of foreign intelligence services on our territory,” said \u0141uka\u0161enka. “The forms of their operation are becoming more and more aggressive. They send not only spies here, but also terrorist agents. They’re trying to set up extremist cells, form some regiments of our refugees, hire mercenaries. . . . Together with the Russian Federation, we’ve probably arrested about twenty groups of terrorists who were trying to carry out terrorist operations on the territory of Russia and Belarus.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day earlier, Ivan Tertel, chairman of the State Security Committee (KGB), was telling similar horror stories to scare the population with terrorists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Seven groups in Poland are preparing for the seizure of facilities and terrorist attacks in Belarus, and the Ukrainian secret services are recruiting Belarusians remotely, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The examples are Vilejka, where our citizens were recruited, and the attempted terrorist attacks in the Minsk and Vi\u0441iebsk regions, which were reported in the press. . . . Various kinds of cells are formed in different structures. Now they are actively working on the formation of such cells at enterprises and universities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To justify political terror against the population, the KGB claims it has thwarted a terrible conspiracy by terrorists and spies to penetrate all pores of Belarusian society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Tertel, apart from terrorist attacks, external and internal enemies are targeting the February 25 elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The main focus will be on discrediting the elections. They haven’t started yet, but statements about Belarusians not having a choice are already being heard,” the KGB chief said in an apparent reference to remarks by leading opposition figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Minsk has already made it clear that it will not allow any opponents to run in the local and parliamentary elections, so Belarusians will have no choice but to vote for pro-government candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tertel said that some 350 \u201cso-called independent observers” have been trained in Georgia, Lithuania, Poland, and a few other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They are trained with money from secret services, which is laundered through Czech, American and other foundations. All the money is allocated by the secret services for staging a coup in our country,” he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
