\u0141uka\u0161enka silent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Belarusian leader usually likes to talk about hot topics of the world politics in and out of place. However, he usually takes a pause when he does not know what to say. A recent example was the seizure of Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijani troops, which led to a humanitarian catastrophe for native Armenians living there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although Belarus is Armenia’s ally in the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Minsk favors Baku because it profits from trade with Azerbaijan. In comparison with Armenia, Azerbaijan is much richer and Belarus has already sold weapons to Baku. \ufeff<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u0141uka\u0161enka’s relations with the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev are much warmer than with the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is perceived as a “revolutionary troublemaker”. Besides, Belarusian authorities have quite good relations with Turkey, which supports Baku.
Apparently, this complicated web of interests makes Belarus’ talkative ruler reluctant to comment on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
The same applies to Israel\u2019s war against Hamas. For many politicians and ordinary people it is obvious that Israel came under attack and became a victim of barbaric aggression. However, for the Belarusian leadership to speak out in favor of Israel would be to blow the same tune as the United States and other “shitty democracies,” as \u0141uka\u0161enka puts it. Kiev supported Israel. Cichano\u016dskaja did too, which is a very smart diplomacy. \u0141uka\u0161enka is reluctant to join this company.
However, Hamas brutality prevents the Belarusian regime from officially supporting it, even though political opponents in Belarus are persecuted using similar medieval methods.
Shooting civilians as a “modern method of warfare”?<\/strong>
Many analysts openly say that the main beneficiaries of the escalation in Israel are Iran and Russia.
In particular, the war may disrupt the preparation of a peace agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which has complex relations with Tehran. Oil prices are likely to rise. Western attention will be diverted from Ukraine, and aid to Kiev may decrease.
That would clearly benefit both Moscow and Minsk. According to the US Institute for the Study of War, “the Kremlin has already used and will likely continue to use the Hamas attacks in Israel to conduct several information operations aimed at reducing US and Western support and attention to Ukraine.”
In particular, Russian propaganda is pushing the narrative that the war between Israel and Hamas benefits Washington. It is trying to demoralize the Ukrainians by saying that the West is already tired of supporting Kiev. Kremlin-controlled media outlets also speculate that Hamas could have received American weapons from Ukraine.
The escalation has received muted coverage by the Belarusian state media. Perhaps, media executives have not received clear instructions from their superiors. Some cover the story in a relatively neutral way, but their overall orientation to Moscow narratives is evident.
The ONT <\/em>TV channel, for example, quotes Russian military observer Alexander Artamonov, who claims that “it is in the interests of the Americans to inflame the conflict.” His motivation is ironclad, “Because it is good for them in any case, if a new theater of war opens in the Middle East.”
Political scientist Aleksei Belyaev told Alfa Radio<\/em>, “If the conflict in the Middle East escalates, Ukraine will go into the information shadow, and will lose the necessary financial and military aid.”
Minsk-based political scientist Yuri Shevtsov told BelTA<\/em> that “the Israeli army is lagging behind in mastering modern methods of warfare, and the Palestinians are ahead of them in mastering these methods.” Can shooting civilians, rape and hostage-taking be considered modern methods of warfare?
Tension with Israel is not a good idea<\/strong>
The state-controlled newspaper Minskaja Pra\u016dda went as far as to say that “the victory of Palestine in the occupied territories is the victory of Moscow and Minsk”. But the controversial article disappeared from the newspaper website later. <\/p>\n\n\n\nApparently, the propagandist has overdone it, trying to guess the thinking of the big bosses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u0141uka\u0161enka have used to make statements with anti-Semitic overtones that outraged Jews and Israel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Belarusian ruler\u2019s worldview is largely shaped by his Soviet outlook and ideological background. In the Soviet Union, support for the “righteous cause of the Palestinian people” and condemnation of the “Israeli military clique” was commonplace. Belarusian authorities have close ties with Arab countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Minsk is unwilling to upset Israel, one of few democracies that has not criticized the Belarusian regime. In addition, the Hamas offensive may soon be over. It seems that the Israelis have quite serious intentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of course, \u0141uka\u0161enka can make an impromptu statement, stunning his diplomats, but so far Minsk prefers to cautiously “express concern” and call for de-escalation without making much distinction between the conflict parties.
