Average pre-tax wages are reportedly approaching 3,000 rubles, while real disposable incomes continue to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/29376436\/embed#?secret=C15agM61ac\" data-secret=\"C15agM61ac\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason, however, is not greater economic efficiency but a severe labor shortage, which is forcing employers to compete for workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, compared with five or ten years ago, Belarusian families are objectively better off. This trend is also reflected in citizens&#8217; own assessments. In 2012, only 69.1 percent of Belarusian families rated their financial situation as average or above average. By 2025, that figure had risen to 92.7 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the overwhelming majority of families now consider their standard of living to be acceptable. This partly reflects real income growth and declining poverty levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/29376548\/embed#?secret=2jtlEb9yWD\" data-secret=\"2jtlEb9yWD\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, rising incomes do not necessarily create a broadly prosperous society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Average wages not average for everyone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Income statistics are often misleading because averages can paint a much more favorable picture than the reality faced by a typical worker. For example, at the end of 2025, the average pre-tax wage exceeded 2,700 rubles, but the median salary was only about 2,080 rubles. In other words, half of all workers earned less than that amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Bie\u0142stat data show that the share of the most affluent groups is gradually increasing, while the share of low-income groups is shrinking. However, most people remain concentrated within the middle-income range. Belarus has become less poor, but it has not become prosperous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the ratio of disposable income between the richest 10 percent and the poorest 10 percent of households. It rose from 5.5 in 1995 to 5.6 in 2010, 5.7 in 2020, and 6.1 in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/29376590\/embed#?secret=6dwXVaguM3\" data-secret=\"6dwXVaguM3\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Over three decades, the structure of income distribution has changed very little. Overall income levels have risen, but the relative distance between the top and bottom of the distribution remains largely unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eurostat vs. Bie\u0142stat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When analyzing Belarusians&#8217; incomes, it is important to look beyond domestic trends, particularly when discussing nominal figures that are not adjusted for inflation. What matters is how Belarus compares with neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, Belarusians have migrated abroad in search of higher wages and better living standards. The latest figures suggest that the situation still does not favor Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eurostat reports a steep increase in hourly pay rates across neighboring countries. In Lithuania, the rate rose from \u20ac7.4 in 2016 to \u20ac17.8 in 2025; in Latvia, from \u20ac7.7 to \u20ac16.3; and in Poland, from \u20ac8.7 to \u20ac19.1. Growth has been observed across almost the entire region. By comparison, hourly wages in Belarus increased from approximately \u20ac2.6 in 2016 to \u20ac6.2 in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, neighboring economies grew faster than Belarus, meaning that the wage gap continued to widen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Migration, travel, remote employment and access to information\u2014even despite increasing restrictions\u2014allow Belarusians to compare domestic wages with those available abroad. The disparity is evident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarusians are objectively wealthier today than they were five or ten years ago. Yet they still lag significantly behind many neighboring countries in terms of income and overall prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainability of growth in question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Research by independent think tanks has found that real wages in Belarus have grown faster than the economy as a whole. This trend has been driven largely by labor shortages and is therefore unlikely to be sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If wage growth is not accompanied by gains in labor productivity, investment and economic efficiency, it is likely to slow in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Economist Dmitry Kruk points out that in the early 2010s Belarus&#8217;s level of prosperity accounted for about 85 percent of Poland&#8217;s, whereas today it is closer to 50 percent. Moreover, if current trends continue, that figure could decline to 40 percent by 2030\u20132035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, Belarus may become wealthier relative to its own past while becoming poorer relative to the countries against which its citizens measure their standard of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem is that neighboring economies are growing faster, making the contrast increasingly stark. For Belarus, this means that even sustained income growth does not guarantee a narrowing of the gap with Poland, Lithuania and other neighbors if they continue to advance more rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, Bie\u0142stat&#8217;s data paint a mixed picture. On the one hand, Belarusians are indeed significantly better off than they were ten years ago.
