In 2020, nearly 953,000 Pakistanis were living in Europe, according to data from the IOM and UNDESA. The 2021 UK census reported over 1.6 million people of Pakistani origin in the country, many of whom now hold British citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 600,000 officially registered Pakistani workers, students, and their families reside in Northern Europe; around 200,000 live in Southern Europe; 145,000 in Western Europe; and fewer than 10,000 in Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/22626260\/embed#?secret=x1650utfdY\" data-secret=\"x1650utfdY\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>European nations typically offer well-developed infrastructure for migrant integration, along with higher wages and better welfare systems. Naturally, many Pakistani workers would prefer countries like Germany, where average monthly pay reaches \u20ac3,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even Russia, with its larger economy and higher demand for labor, offers more competitive wages than Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skilled workers tend to seek destinations where integration is easier and wages are higher. For unskilled workers, the high cost of migration often outweighs potential benefits unless value can be added quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concerns in the neighborhood<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Efforts to bring Pakistani workers to Belarus may raise alarm in the European Union, which has been grappling with an irregular migration crisis since 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0141uka\u0161enka may view tens of thousands of foreign workers as a strategic asset\u2014if Pakistan is willing to let its citizens become pawns in geopolitical games between Minsk and Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EU border forces have already apprehended Pakistani nationals among third-country asylum seekers attempting to cross into the EU via Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Potential social strains<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A large-scale migration initiative would increase pressure on Belarus\u2019 law enforcement agencies, which already struggle to maintain control over the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance, Pakistani workers may seem apolitical and even thankful for the opportunity to work. But problems could arise if working or living conditions fail to meet their expectations. In 2015, several hundred Chinese workers protested in Belarus over unpaid wages. What might happen if thousands of foreign workers gather in Minsk under similar circumstances?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Social tensions on the horizon<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The arrival of a significant number of Pakistani migrants could test Belarusian society, already strained by internal divisions, economic disparity and institutional distrust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workers from different cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds might spark tension\u2014not just among government critics, but also among its supporters. Sudden societal changes often provoke anxiety across the political spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A surge in migration may require the deployment of additional security forces to monitor foreign workers, facilitate their adaptation and prevent street or workplace conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even countries with strong institutions and long histories of managing migration face issues such as ghettoization, ethnic crime and xenophobia. If such challenges occur in societies where tolerance is a core value, the risks are considerably higher for Belarus, where such practices are largely undeveloped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country currently lacks a stable, functioning system for cultural integration\u2014making a mass influx of migrants both socially and politically delicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What roles could Pakistani workers fill?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus is experiencing labor shortages across nearly all sectors due to population decline and ongoing emigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistani workers could fill gaps in agriculture, textiles, construction, logistics, utilities, transport and trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Germany, Pakistanis are commonly employed in construction, logistics and services. In Italy and Spain, they often work in agriculture and hospitality. In France and Belgium, they\u2019re active in eldercare and restaurant industries.
