\n Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka has come to realize that Russia\u2019s defeat in Ukraine might accelerate his fall. His nuclear threats to the West are his psychological defense.<\/span><\/b>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t During the November 23 summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Yerevan, the Belarusian leader criticized politicians for brandishing nuclear weapons. \u201cOur firm conviction is that there must be no place for nuclear blackmail in international politics,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t But after the summit, he told a journalist that Russia and Belarus would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons if attacked. \u201cListen, you even can\u2019t imagine how we can respond . . . We wouldn\u2019t discuss a dirty or clean nuclear bomb problem here. This is no longer under discussion. We will respond so that not only Europe will shake. And not only we [Belarus], these are our agreements with Russia, these are our joint armed forces with it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Often-repeated accusation<\/h2>\n

\n\t The Belarusian leader repeats his accusation that the West is planning to attack Belarus so often that no one takes him seriously. But his remarks about Russia\u2019s readiness to use nuclear weapons have created a stir.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The Kremlin has toned down its nuclear rhetoric as of late after the Chinese and Indian leaders denounced the nuclear blackmail and Washington explained what it can do in response.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t But \u0141uka\u0161enka took the center stage to say what Vladimir Putin was unwilling to say. He played the role of the Russian leader\u2019s spokesman.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t It is easy for him to blackmail the world because he has nothing to lose in terms of reputation.\n<\/p>\n

Attempts to force Kyiv to negotiate<\/h2>\n

\n\t On that day, \u0141uka\u0161enka played the role of Putin\u2019s mouthpiece both at the official part and at his meeting with journalists.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Russian officials have been vocal in emphasizing Moscow\u2019s readiness for talks with Ukraine. \u0141uka\u0161enka elaborated on the topic at his meeting with journalists after the conference. He said what Putin is reluctant to say publicly. In particular, he urged the international community to force Kyiv to sit at the negotiating table to prevent Ukraine\u2019s \u201cannihilation.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t During the summit, \u0141uka\u0161enka urged the leaders of CSTO member states to unite against the West. This is something that Moscow is looking for.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The Belarusian ruler acknowledged differences among CSTO members. \u201cNot surprisingly, we had four meetings, both in videoconference format and offline. And so far, unfortunately, we have few reasons for optimism.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t At the end of the summit meeting, the Armenian leader refused to sign two documents.\n<\/p>\n

World of illusion<\/h2>\n

\n\t \u0141uka\u0161enka always blames differences, crises and challenges facing CSTO countries on the West.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cWe repeatedly said that they attempt to shake societies loose in our countries exactly on the periphery of the Russian Federation,\u201d he claimed. \u201cFirst Ukraine burst into flames; in 2020 they attempted to destroy Belarus. We, Belarusians, went through it. In January this year, Kazakhstan (it is good that the Kazakhstan leadership dealt with the conflict). The conflict of Armenia and Azerbaijan. . . They [the West] don\u2019t need stability and peace in our region, they need havoc managed by them. . . They pit us one against the other.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The Belarusian leader tries to convert his theory about a Western conspiracy, which is promoted by Belarusian and Russian television networks, into real politics and base some actions on it.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He is trying to impose a parallel realm on the other leaders and wonders why they don\u2019t buy it.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He has been living in his world of illusions for quite long, and it has left its imprint on his mentality. He does not even try to understand the causes of CSTO crises. The most important one is Russia\u2019s geopolitical weakness, a direct consequence of its imperialist policy.\n<\/p>\n

* * *<\/h2>\n

\n\t Most importantly, \u0141uka\u0161enka anticipates Russia\u2019s defeat and its implications for his political survival. \u201cIf, God forbid, Russia collapses, our place is under that rubble,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t His forecast is quite accurate. His nuclear threats are his psychological defense in the face of the danger.\n<\/p>\n
