Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka sees the regiment as a major threat to his regime.\n<\/p>\n<h2>KGB chief fears of incursions<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Minsk is clearly concerned about the opposition\u2019s alleged plan to use armed groups against the \u0141uka\u0161enka government in Belarus. Those who have emphasized the threat recently include \u0141uka\u0161enka, Security Council Secretary Alaksandr Valfovi\u010d, Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin and KGB Chairman Ivan Tertel.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The latter visited the Minsk Tractor Plant on October 17 to inform workers of high risks of invasion of Belarus. He said that several hundred Belarusian militants are waiting in Ukraine for a chance to attack Belarus, and added that Poland hosted about 80 militants and Lithuania, about 60.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t He said that if Russia is defeated, a group of 100 to 300 armed militants is expected to enter Belarus near the town of Malaryta and take a town or a district center. \u201cThen the hirelings from other countries will join in under the pretext of volunteers from Ukraine. Inflicting losses on our law enforcers, they will be heading for Minsk,\u201d he said. He said that opposition leaders were panning an attack for November.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Interestingly, the KGB chief does not rule out that Russia may lose the war. Surprisingly, he assumes that a few hundred of militants can advance as far as Minsk. A few days earlier, \u0141uka\u0161enka boasted of his 70,000-strong army at a gathering in Astana.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Obviously, Belarusian officials take arms groups involving Belarusian volunteers seriously and have been taking measures to blunt the threat.\n<\/p>\n<h2>Kalino\u016dski Regiment emerges as political player<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not responded to overtures from Belarusian opposition leader Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t On the other hand, members of Ukraine\u2019s Verkhovna Rada have declared readiness to deal with the Kalino\u016dski Regiment as an authorized representative of the Belarusian opposition.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Vadzim Kaban\u010duk, deputy commander of the Kalino\u016dski Regiment, told RFE\/RL Belarus Service that his unit has a political agenda and that its leaders have some second thoughts about Cichano\u016dskaja.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t \u201cWe seek to change the situation in Belarus. To make sure no one accuses us of a desire to establish a junta after the ouster of the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime in Belarus, we will call a free election. If the Kalino\u016dski Regiment is the principal character, we will call a free election. Everyone who wishes, including the pro-democratic forces, will be able to take part,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t More opponents have recently come to support the view that opposition forces need to act more resolutely and radically to defeat the entrenched \u0141uka\u0161enka regime. The Cichano\u016dskaja camp responded to that sentiment by including two former security officers in its cabinet.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Groups that can put radical scenarios into practice are looking to take the driver\u2019s seat. The Kalino\u016dski Regiment has enough first-hand combat experience and repeatedly said that its mission was to liberate Belarus after Ukraine defeats Russia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The regiment has received extensive media coverage. It seeks to capitalize on publicity by taking on a more active political role. Officials have facilitated promotion by discussing and playing up the threat posed by it.
