\n Border authorities in neighboring countries have registered a sharp rise in attempts by third-country nationals to cross the border illegally from Belarus into Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. <\/span><\/b>\n<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\n 2021 migration crisis<\/b>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Europe was shocked by the migrant crisis involving Belarus last year, with European officials accusing Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka of engineering it. Infuriated by Western sanctions, Minsk suspended cooperation with the European Union (EU) on countering illegal migration. \u201cYou will have to catch them yourselves,\u201d the Belarusian leader warned the EU neighbors.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Minsk later withdrew from the readmission treaty with the EU.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Belarusian authorities facilitated illegal migration, evidence suggests. Poland and Lithuania produced documents that showed at least one Belarusian state-owned travel company involved in bringing would-be migrants to the country, while the state carrier more than doubled flights on a route popular with asylum seekers.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Documents released by Poland showed that hundreds of Iraqis received visa support from a state-run travel company in Belarus to visit for hunting and other trips.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Migrants and travel agents in Iraq and Turkey described the relative ease with which they have obtained documents for passage to Belarus.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Commercial flights brought hundreds of travelers, mostly Iraqi Kurds, from Istanbul and Iraq every day.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t In 2021, Poland reported illegal crossing attempts involving 39,500 migrants; Lithuania, more than 12,000 migrants; and Latvia counted more than 5,000.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Latvia, Lithuania and Poland declared a state of emergency, while the EU held talks with the Iraqi authorities to suspend passenger service between Baghdad and Minsk.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The migrant crisis heightened tensions between the EU and Belarus and Russia.\n<\/p>\n

\n 2022: transit through Russia<\/b>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The influx of migrants subsided in winter but has been on the rise in the last couple of months.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Latvia, Lithuania and Poland have been stopping about a hundred and more migrants every day.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Lithuania registered nearly 6,000 attempts in 2022 and Poland, about 8,000.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t On August 5, Lithuanian border guards appealed to the army and police to deploy reinforcements to the shared border with Belarus.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cFears of a new migrant crisis are justified,\u201d said Hiennadz Kor\u0161una\u016d, a Belarusian sociologist, told The Viewer. \u201cIt is enough to look at statistical data for weeks and months to see that the flows of migrants are directed by someone.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cIn one period, migrants are trying to cross the Lithuanian border, then they move to the Polish border and afterward converge on the Latvian border,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He noted that a new influx began in March after Russia had assaulted Ukraine.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Whereas before migrants traveled directly by plane, now most of them transit Russia, he said.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The migration crisis has been orchestrated, he said. The objective seems to be to mass thousands of foreigners on the Belarusian-EU border at a certain moment.\n<\/p>\n

\n Fence not an obstacle<\/b>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Russia plays a dominant role in orchestrating the crisis, Aurimas Navys, a Lithuanian former security officer told BPN.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cMinsk receives orders from Moscow, including the order to organize an illegal migration channel,\u201d he said, stressing that he does not perceive Belarus as an independent country.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Illegal migration is part of the Kremlin\u2019s plan to destabilize Europe amid the war in Ukraine. The plan also includes cutting off gas supply.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t To protect their borders, Poland and Lithuania have built five-meter-high fences, while Latvia is planning to complete the fence before the cold season sets in.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t But \u0141uka\u0161enka dismissed the effort as a waste of money. During his visit to the Minsk Mechanical Plant on August 26, he said that it takes migrants three minutes to get over the fence.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Reports have been coming in that migrants are digging holes under the fence. Lithuanian border officials have also accused their Belarusian counterparts of helping migrants to break through.\n<\/p>\n

\n Influx may peak this fall<\/b>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Still, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland have been registering far fewer illegal crossing attempts than last year. On the other hand, migrants have been coming in from a broader range of countries, including Bangladesh, Benin, Cameroon, Congo, C\u00f4te d’Ivoire, Cuba, Egypt, Eritrea, India, Iran, Liberia, Mali, Togo, Tunisia and Uzbekistan.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Navys said he expected a surge in late fall, and added that the EU has enough time to prepare.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Kor\u0161una\u016d pointed out that \u0141uka\u0161enka is hoping to benefit from the crisis. He may \u201ctry to take advantage of it to demonstrate [Vladimir] Putin that he stands by him and is also fighting. He will do anything to avoid sending Belarusian troops to Ukraine,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n
