Most respondents (52 percent) do not have confidence in the Belarusian government.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Bikana\u016d linked the surge as evidence of public support for Minsk\u2019s declared reluctance to send troops to Ukraine to reinforce the Russian onslaught.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t For some Belarusians, the political crisis is over, said Ryhor Astapienia, director of the Center for New Ideas think tank. \u201cThey think that [Alaksandr] \u0141uka\u0161enka is a reality, to which they have to adapt and with which they have to live.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Some people compare Belarus to Russia and Ukraine, and conclude that they are better off than these countries, he added.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Alaksandr Fridman, a political analyst, said that he was surprised that public trust in the \u0141uka\u0161enka government had recovered after the 2020 political crisis. He added that any polls conducted in Belarus cannot be reliable because people are afraid to answer honestly for fear of reprisals.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The poll suggests that many Belarusians do not feel guilty for the hostility in Ukraine and do not blame the government for it, he told The Viewer.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Polarization<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t The Belarusian Change Tracker team noted that the war in Ukraine has been a source of extreme political polarization potentially fraught with violence.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t \u201cBoth camps understand that they have nothing to discuss with their opponents,\u201d Astapienia said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The opponents of the government are getting increasingly frustrated with the regime as it continues a crackdown on dissent, Fridman said. \u201cSupporters of the government \u2013 security officers and bureaucrats \u2013 understand that their fate completely depends on \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s, whose fate depends on the outcome of the war.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Belarusian leader playing losing game<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Public sentiment after the war will depend on Belarus\u2019 economic health, Astapienia said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t \u201cWe understand that the economy is in decline,\u201d he told The Viewer. He noted that the public may blame \u0141uka\u0161enka for the downturn, or it may also blame the West, the opposition and the international sanctions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The pro-democracy forces have not been doing enough to win over voters, he added.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t \u201cIt is difficult to imagine how \u0141uka\u0161enka can benefit from the war,\u201d Fridman said. \u201cIf Russia loses, it will be weaker, and the regime will find it more difficult to lean on it. If Russia wins, [Vladimir] Putin will continue to reshape the post-Soviet area. He can simply lose patience with the mercurial \u0141uka\u0161enka.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t \u201cPeople who have backed the government amid the war may change their mind. Everything can change very quickly.
