{"id":11425,"date":"2022-06-03T16:32:59","date_gmt":"2022-06-03T13:32:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/longreads\/analyst-sees-volunteer-corps-as-psychological-deterrent\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"analyst-sees-volunteer-corps-as-psychological-deterrent","status":"publish","type":"longreads","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/longreads\/11425\/","title":{"rendered":"Analyst sees volunteer corps as psychological deterrent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span><span style=\"color: #212529\">By Alaksandr K\u0142asko\u016dski, BPN<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span><span style=\"color: #212529\">* Reproduction prohibited<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <b><span style=\"color: #212529\">Belarus plans to arm and equip volunteer military groups of approximately 50 people under control of village soviets (elected councils), Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka announced on June 3. <\/span><\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span><span style=\"color: #212529\"><b>Parotnika\u016d: Regime unlikely to give arms to volunteers<\/b><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">The Belarusian ruler said that volunteer corps will be set up in addition to territorial defense forces. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">Belarus\u2019 territorial defense force totals 120,000 reserve soldiers who may be called for duty in the event of an armed conflict. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">Andrej Parotnika\u016d, of Belarus Security Blog, noted that the force is hardly combat worthy and it would take a long time and a major effort to deploy it for action because weapons are stored at military units. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">\u201cI don\u2019t belie the regime will give arms to volunteers because many opponents of the regime would be willing to join their ranks,\u201d he told The Viewer. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span><span style=\"color: #212529\"><b>Sivicki: Minsk fears of regional conflict<\/b><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">Minsk fears that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict may spill over into a regional war, said Ar\u015ben Sivicki, head of the Center of Strategic and Foreign Policy Studies.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">The volunteer corps may be used to reinforce territorial defense units, he added. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">He sees the announcement as \u201ca psychological deterrent for Ukraine and its Western allies against any attempts to extend hostilities to Belarus,\u201d<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span><span style=\"color: #212529\"><b>Officials do not trust citizens, many want to overthrow government<\/b><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">The idea of giving guns to people to defend themselves is not new. \u0141uka\u0161enka said in October 2018 that the government would hand out seven million guns to each adult Belarusian, if someone attacked it. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">That would be a major risk for \u0141uka\u0161enka because volunteers may turn their rifles on the regime, Sivicki said. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">The Belarusian leader on June 3 warned against \u201cuncontrollable distribution of guns like it occurred in Ukraine.\u201d<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">\u201cWe need, just in case, to have a volunteer corps, a group of people under every village soviet (elected council). It<\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\">will<\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\">not<\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\">be<\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\">a<\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\">big<\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\">group<\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\">. <\/span><span style=\"color: #212529\">Maybe 50 people. They should also have their weapons somewhere in the storehouse. When we call them for training, they will take their automatic rifles (it will mainly be an automatic rifle, a grenade launcher, a pistol) so that they can protect their home,\u201d he said.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">Obviously, very few village soviets will be able to recruit 50 volunteers. Moreover, officials are likely to vet candidates to make sure that opponents of the government cannot infiltrate their ranks. And authorities are likely to keep weapons outside their reach. <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white\">\n <span style=\"color: #212529\">Therefore, volunteer corps are unlikely to be better trained and equipped than territorial defense forces.
