Russian polls show overwhelming support for the invasion.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Attitudes differ significantly despite the heavy influence of Russian and Belarusian pro-war propaganda on Belarusians.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Pro-Russian sentiment persists<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Still, many Belarusians support the Kremlin\u2019s policies and narratives. More than half (52.2 percent) welcomed Moscow\u2019s recognition of the so-called Luhansk and Donetsk People\u2019s Republics. Only 24.5 percent blamed Russia for the war, which began on February 24.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t More Belarusians (46 percent) said that their country would be better off in an alliance with Russia than with the European Union (29.6 percent).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The poll found the country split down the middle between those in favor of Russian troops\u2019 presence in Belarus (45 percent) and those who disapproved of it (46.9 percent).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t On the other hand, nearly 62 percent disapproved of Russia\u2019s use of Belarusian territory and infrastructure for attacks on Ukraine, while only 29.1 percent approved of it.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Only 11.1 percent support possible deployment of Belarusian troops to Ukraine. Despite strong pro-Russian sentiment, most Belarusians do not want to spill their blood for the Kremlin\u2019s interests.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Luka\u0161enka walking a tightrope<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Most Belarusians want their country to be neutral. Although 31 percent supported Belarus\u2019 membership of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, only 4.7 percent would like their country to join NATO and nearly 52 percent said that it should keep away from any military alliances.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Aliaksandr Luka\u0161enka rewrote the constitution earlier this year to remove a clause on Belarus\u2019 aspiration for neutrality.
