The West sees Belarus as a co-aggressor and has imposed sanctions on both Russia and Belarus. Aliaksandr Luka\u0161enka\u2019s further support for the Russian operation may send the Belarusian economy into a tailspin.<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The Belarusian rubel has fallen sharply against the dollar after Russia invaded Ukraine. Sanctions have hit foreign trade, the banking sector, businesses and people. Economists warn of more trouble ahead.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>\u0139vo\u016dski: Financial sanctions to hit Belarusian businesses<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Western restrictions on imports of potash fertilizers, oil products, cement, metals, wood and other goods from Belarus may shave off up to 2 percent of Belarus\u2019 GDP, said Lie\u016d \u0139vo\u016dski, of the Belarusian Economic Research and Outreach Center (BEROC).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Belarusian-Ukrainian ties have been disrupted indefinitely. Belarus\u2019 exports to Ukraine accounted for 5 percent of its GDP, and imports made up 2.5 percent of GDP. It is unclear whether Belarus will be able to replace Ukrainian imports and how it will affect prices, he noted.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Western sanctions targeting banks will affect businesses. Foreign companies will be unwilling to sell goods to Belarusian counterparts without prepayment because they are expecting more restrictions on payments.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Credit in Belarus has become more expensive after the country\u2019s central bank raised the base refinance rate to 12 percent from 9.25 percent. Moreover, commercial banks are said to be reluctant to issue new loans because of the economic uncertainty.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The Russian and Belarusian currencies are expected to depreciate and inflation is likely to accelerate because of food sanctions and problems with international payments, \u0139vo\u016dski said.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Moscow may offer financial assistance<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Before giving his permission to Russia to use Belarusian soil for its attack, Luka\u0161enka might have reached a deal with Vladimir Putin on financial assistance. Its details may be announced in the next few months, \u0139vo\u016dski said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Moscow will not be able to compensate Belarus fully for the losses caused by its attack on Ukraine, said D\u017amitry Kruk, a Belarusian economist.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Even if Moscow launches programs to support Belarusian exports, they may not work because of the panic in all sectors of the Russian economy, he noted.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Possible impact on Belarusians<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Banks may freeze foreign currency deposits or convert people savings into Belarusian rubels in response to bad economic news, \u0139vo\u016dski said. Companies may be struggling to pay wages and Belarusians\u2019 income is likely to shrink, Kruk added.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Rubel depreciation and price hikes have already occurred, he said. \u201cA combination of shocks\u2026 for the Belarusian economy may give rise to a great number of secondary consequences,\u201d he noted.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The Belarusian government should have distanced itself from this war and prohibit Russia from using the country\u2019s territory to forestall major economic shocks, \u0139vo\u016dski said. \u201cBut Aliaksandr Luka\u0161enka seems unable to do it,\u201d he told BPN.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Aliaksandr Klasko\u016dski, BPN The Russian-Ukrainian war has hit Belarus\u2019 economy very hard.
