<\/span><\/p>\n

\n Aliaksandr Luka\u0161enka used the March 4 constitution signing ceremony to stress that he does not plan to send troops to fight in Ukraine.  <\/b>\n<\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

\n\t In an apparent reference to the West, he said that \u201ccertain forces\u201d were dragging Belarus into fighting but added that the Belarusians \u201chave no reason to worry.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cI want to stress it again that we have deployed our forces to protect the state border from Brest to Mazyr. The Belarusian army has not taken any part in the special operation and does not intend to take part in it. There is simply no need for it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Eager to stay in power<\/span> <\/h2>\n

\n\t Luka\u0161enka expressed regret that people did not take his statements seriously. \u201cYou know, if you don\u2019t hear me, it is high time for you to elect a new president.\u201d \n<\/p>\n

\n\t Naturally, he does not plan to step down. Now that tension between Moscow and the West is climbing, he seems more motivated to rule as long as he can. \n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cThe conflict in Ukraine, sorry to say that, has begun today and will end tomorrow, no matter how painful it is. But this hybrid war that has been unleashed against Belarus, especially the war of sanctions in the economy and finances, is here for long.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t In a reference to the West, he said, \u201cThey don\u2019t need any peace there. They need war. The longer the better. They want to submerge Russia in the war, and us too.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Last year, he said that he would stay in office forever if the West kept interfering in Belarus\u2019 internal affairs.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Since the West sees Belarus as an accomplice in Russia\u2019s invasion in Ukraine, Western pressure on Luka\u0161enka is likely to increase, so he has an excuse to stay on. Moreover, he is likely to consolidate his power by taking charge of the All-Belarusian People\u2019s Assembly. He realizes that he will remain in office for only as long as Moscow backs him and he backs Moscow.\n<\/p>\n

Closely associated with Russia<\/span> <\/h2>\n

\n\t This time Luka\u0161enka sounded more confident than before when he said that Belarus will not fight in Ukraine. \u201cWe were not called or asked at all,” he noted in a remark suggesting that Vladimir Putin does not exert much pressure on its ally to step into the fray. Probably, Putin wants to use Belarus as a safe place for negotiations with Kyiv. \n<\/p>\n

\n\t Putin and Luka\u0161enka had a two-hour phone conversation on March 4.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cThey have buttoned up us tightly to Russia. They need to break down this country powerful in military terms. But don\u2019t you, na\u00efve people, understand that if Russia falls, we\u2019ll be next. Even not next. We will fall together,\u201d Luka\u0161enka said.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He is right that the two regimes are now bound together, especially after Belarus offered its territory for the Russian assault on Ukraine. \n<\/p>\n

\n\t But Luka\u0161enka is trying to wriggle out by emphasizing that he will not send Belarusian troops to Ukraine. Those statements do not relieve him from responsibility for complicity. \n<\/p>\n

Constitution is meaningless word<\/span> <\/h2>\n

\n\t Ironically, the new constitution contains the clause that Belarus \u201crules out military aggression from its territory against other states.\u201d \n<\/p>\n

\n\t Luka\u0161enka on March 4 claimed that Belarus \u201cmade a serious step to beef up the country\u2019s sovereignty\u201d despite international tensions and \u201cthreats to our traditional way of life.\u201d \n<\/p>\n

\n\t However, many observers say that Luka\u0161enka has ceded fundamental sovereignty over Belarus\u2019 military policy, describing him as the Kremlin\u2019s puppet.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t As the West tightens its sanctions, the Belarusian regime will be more reliant on Russia and Luka\u0161enka has no other option but to work in lockstep with Moscow. If Putin decides at some point that he needs Belarusian troops in Ukraine, Luka\u0161enka, the Belarusian army\u2019s commander in chief, will simply fulfil Putin\u2019s order. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
