{"id":11346,"date":"2022-02-04T15:11:27","date_gmt":"2022-02-04T12:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/longreads\/luniniec-airfield-good-enough-but-unlikely-to-be-used-as-russias-permanent-airbase\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"luniniec-airfield-good-enough-but-unlikely-to-be-used-as-russias-permanent-airbase","status":"publish","type":"longreads","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/longreads\/11346\/","title":{"rendered":"Luniniec airfield good enough, but unlikely to be used as Russia\u2019s permanent airbase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n <span>By Aliaksandr Aliesin, BPN<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n <b>Russia has deployed Sukhoi Su-35 fighters to Belarus\u2019 Baranavi\u010dy airfield for a joint exercise titled Allied Resolve 2022, leaving some observers wondering whether it considers establishing a permanent airbase in the neighboring country.<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p> <b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n\t Militarist, a Telegram channel, reported with reference to anonymous sources that Russia considers using the Luniniec airfield, some 40 kilometers off the Belarusian-Ukrainian border, as a permanent base for its fighters.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Airfield good enough to host Su-35 fighters<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t The Lunienec District Executive Committee on January 26 ordered local construction companies to build several barracks and two residential buildings at the Luniniec airfield as soon as possible, Militarist reported, noting that the buildings are likely to be occupied by Russian Su-30SM and Su-35 technicians and pilots.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Russia appears to be closer to establishing an air base in Belarus, Militarist concluded.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Russian Su-30 fighter jets had been deployed to the Baranavi\u010dy airfield, Brest region, as assets contributed by Moscow to a joint training center for pilots and missile system operators. The Su-35 fighters have been deployed to the same airfield for the exercise scheduled to be held from February 10 to February 20.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The Luniniec airfield is good enough to be used by Su-30 and Su-35 fighters for landing and take-off. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was a temporary base for various types of warplanes, including bombers, that landed there for training at the nearby Palieski bombing range. The airfield currently hosts Mi-6, Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters assigned to the 1169th Reserve Aviation Equipment Storage Base.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Other aircraft land at the Luniniec airfield only during exercises.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t \u201cThe town\u2019s infrastructure will be developed, restored and renovated,\u201d Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin said in a recent televised interview, referring to Luniniec. \u201cIt will host (and currently hosts) military units, and new units will be sited here.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Aliaksandr Luka\u0161enka visited Luniniec about two weeks ago.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>S-400 missiles more likely to be deployed<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Russia is unlikely to site its airbase so close to the Belarusian-Ukrainian border because it would be potentially exposed to artillery and missile fire from the Ukrainian territory, observers note.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t However, Luniniec may be a good location for S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler) mobile surface-to-air missile systems. Russia has deployed two S-400 battalions for Allied Resolve 2022.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t After the end of training, Russia may leave the missile systems in Belarus. The assets may be used for establishing another joint air defense training center in addition to the one that was established outside Hrodna last fall, commentators speculated.
