Rising salaries could actually be as much of an issue for the economy as falling wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several factors driving wage growth, such as a shortage of workforce, which is forcing companies to offer higher salaries and compete for workers. Besides, some businesses can afford pay hikes after an inflow of defense orders or a rise in sales in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For state-owned companies, raising salaries is still a government-imposed priority, even though it might not be a financially sound decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Average nominal monthly pay figures prove that wages outpace labor productivity. The National Statistical Committee (Bie\u0142stat) publishes median wages and a breakdown by industry and region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Most workers paid below average<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bie\u0142stat data for May shows significant differences in pay by sector and by region. The best-paying jobs are in IT, with more than 7,300 earning over 10,000 rubels ($3,125) a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the textile industry, most workers have a salary of less than 2,000 rubels, and there are few high-paid positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These differences are related both to the industries and the state subsidizing inefficient companies at the expense of profitable ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pay by region<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Minsk is the leader in salaries with three in four employees earning more than 10,000 rubels and half of those paid over 5,000 rubels ($1,563) a month based in the capital. Most of them are employed in the textile industry (84 percent) and agriculture (67 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Viciebsk region, 72 percent make less than 2,000 rubels a month, most are employed in culture and sports (93 percent). Meanwhile, high salaries make up just 0.11% of the region&#8217;s total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Homiel region, 67 percent have salaries less than 2,000 rubels a month, most are employed in education (81 percent) and health care (79 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Hrodna region, 68 percent make less than 2,000 rubels, 81 percent in healthcare, and 83 percent in education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Mahilo\u016d region, 71 percent make less than 2,000 rubels, most are employed in agriculture (76 percent) and the textile industry (82 percent). Just 0.07% of the region&#8217;s workforce is in the high-paid bracket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Minsk region, about 60 percent make less than 2,000 rubels, most are employed in the textile industry (84 percent) and education (77 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, the distance to the capital has a big impact. There are more high-paid workers in the Minsk region (854) than in the other regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pay gap<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bie\u0142stat data highlights regional and sectoral differences in wages in Belarus. Even though salaries are on the rise, most workers are still at the lower end of the pay scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wage inequality is exacerbated by the public sector\u2019s dominance over the private one.
