August 5, Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>. Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has called on the European Union to continue sanctions on Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials, commenting on the new restrictions targeting 28 Minsk officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Thankful to the EU for standing with Belarusians,” she said on X, urging more support to the “people of Belarus opposing the dictatorship and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement follows today’s announcement by the Council of the European Union of the new sanctions against 28 Belarusian officials, including 13 judges who passed sentences in politically-motivated cases. They are subject to a travel ban and asset freeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanctions mark the fourth anniversary of the rigged presidential election in Belarus in August 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few years, democratic countries have imposed multiple restrictions on Belarus over human rights abuses, alleged vote rigging in the 2020 presidential election, a brutal crackdown on protesters, the forced landing of a Ryanair flight, a migration crisis at the European Union border, as well as support of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
