July 30, Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>. Belarusian human rights groups have labeled D\u017amitryj \u0141aba\u010do\u016d, Illa To\u0142sta\u016d, Ja\u016dhien Ramana\u016d, Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Ka\u0142avusa\u016d, Maciej and Leanid Aviar\u010duk, Hienad\u017a Klima\u0161evi\u010d, Aleh Litvin\u010duk, D\u017amitryj \u0141ysiuk, Valancina \u017duko\u016dskaja, Vadzim \u0141ucevi\u010d and Juryj Majsiejenka as political prisoners, their joint statement says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of them were either accused or convicted of violent disorder, a charge that authorities use to punish their opponents. \u0141ucevi\u010d was also accused of calling for sanctions; Majsiejenka, of slandering Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Viasna Human Rights Center, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, Belarusian PEN, the Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Human Constanta and Lawtrend aligned themselves with the statement and called for an immediate release of all political prisoners and an end to the politically-motivated crackdown in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 30, human rights defenders identified at least 1,391 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
