July 30, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>New instances of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus from July 27 to 29 as authorities kept sentencing their opponents in criminal proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kry\u015bcina Sala\u016djova and Hienad\u017a Klima\u0161evi\u010d were given one year and 18 months in prison, respectively, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Both were persecuted for participating in a protest rally in Brest in 2020. A total of 139 people have already been convicted in this case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u0142adzimir Bas\u0142yka went on trial in Minsk behind closed doors, Viasna said. Authorities accuse him of insulting and slandering Aleksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, calling for sanctions, inciting hatred and insulting officials. The man was also blacklisted as a terrorist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanis\u0142a\u016d \u0160apiel, 18, is on trial in Mahilo\u016d on high treason charges, Viasna said. Earlier, the ONT<\/em> TV channel broadcast a propaganda film, accusing the youth of serving as a delivery man for an organization linked to the Ukrainian security services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition activist Andrej Zuje\u016d in Navapo\u0142ack, Viciebsk region, was given seven years in prison and fined 8,000 rubels (about $2,550) on charges of rioting, association with an extremist group and insulting an official in connection with critical social media posts, Viasna’s Viciebsk branch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psychologist Hanna Da\u0161kevi\u010d is on trial in Minsk for allegedly participating in an armed conflict abroad, a charge that may be linked to her pro-Ukrainian position, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viktar \u010cajka, who administered the chat of the Belarusian community in Sri Lanka, went on trial in Minsk on protest-related charges, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested a Minsk businessman for participation in 2020 postelection protests and following opposition content, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro-government Telegram channels reported the arrest of a Brest man for filming a protest rally in August 2020, and a 15-day jail term for a Mahilo\u016d businessman for sharing opposition content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk prosecutors visit Penal Colony No 1 in Navapo\u0142ack every day to force political prisoners to sign pardon requests, according to Viasna’s rights defenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 30, human rights defenders identified at least 1,390 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
