July 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka is planning to visit Pakistan in late 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At today’s government conference in Minsk, he said he had agreed on the visit with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit held in Astana earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Pakistan has over 200 million people. What more do you need?” \u0141uka\u0161enka said, as quoted by his press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of a major effort to boost ties with Asian and African countries, members of the \u0141uka\u0161enka government repeatedly held negotiations with the Pakistani authorities in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2023, then-Foreign Minister Siarhiej Alejnik and his Pakistani counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari discussed plants to assemble Belarusian tractors and electric vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Alejnik, Belarusian business is interested in supplying Pakistan with agricultural, quarrying and road construction equipment, wood products and pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan is far from being Belarus’ major trading partner. Data is not available on two-way trade for 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Belarusian embassy in the South Asian country, between January and August 2021, trade amounted to $53.2 million (Belarusian exports, $44.3 million; imports, $8.9 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan has imported Belarusian tractors since Soviet times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2024, the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad published an assessment of the 30-year relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said that in the first five months of 2023, trade grew by 30 percent, with Belarusian exports to Pakistan increasing by 50 percent year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added that Belarus can help Pakistan achieve its goal of boosting the country’s total exports to $100 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
