July 27, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New instances of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on July 26 as Valeryj Vodzin, Andrej Hryhorje\u016d, Victoryja Vo\u0142\u010dak, Hanna Sava\u010dkina and her mother Ta\u0107ciana Rusak went on trial behind closed doors in Minsk, according to the electronic court schedule. They are accused of high treason and terrorism for allegedly \u201cpreparing a terrorist act on Victory Day\u201d in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hrodna police arrested a man for posting a video of a queue outside a local vehicle registration office, pro-government Telegram channels said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police also arrested a man upon his return from Poland for participating in 2020 postelection protests, Mediazona<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online content<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Barsuko\u016d, Iryna Chitro and Ta\u0107ciana Andru\u0161oj\u0107 were tried in the Hrodna region for sharing opposition content, the Pravo Imeyut<\/em> Telegram channel said. The sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry branded YouTube channel by Daj Darohu rock band as extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viacas\u0142a\u016d Malaj\u010duk will face a third trial for allegedly disobeying the prison administration, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. In May 2022, he had been given a lengthy prison on terrorism-related charges in a case widely seen as politically motivated. His cumulative term is 22 and a half years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nadzieja Karankievi\u010d went on trial over alleged donations to opposition solidarity groups, and Anton Lisi\u010dkin, on charges of inciting hatred and insulting officials, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Extremist” list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry added 11 people to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activity,\u201d including Rico Krieger, a German national on the death row in a Belarusian prison. All of them faced charges typical of politically-motivated cases. Human rights defenders designated Iryna Pahadajeva and Alaksandar \u010cykindzin as political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalist Andrzej Poczobut (Andrej Pa\u010dobut) is held in the internal prison of the Viciebsk region’s Navapo\u0142ack penal colony, Radyjo Racyja<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities put up Eduard Babaryka’s motorcycle and car for an auction, the Bie\u0142jurzabiaspe\u010dannie electronic trading website said. He and his father, former presidential hopeful Viktar Babaryka, are serving lengthy prison terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Jara\u0161evi\u010d, Alaksiej Karpieka and Volha Alchimienka, journalists from the Belarusian investigative project Biuro<\/em>, are on Russia’s interstate wanted list, Mediazona Belarus<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights groups designated seven people persecuted on extremism-related charges as political prisoners, Viasna reported.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 27, human rights defenders identified at least 1,387 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
