July 26, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on July 25 as rights groups reported a crackdown targeting employees of defense industry companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities interrogate them, check their smartphones and force them to undergo lie detector tests, the Viasna Human Rights Center said. Some were arrested and jailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protest-related cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brest police arrested Illa Sobka and another man for participating in 2020 postelection protests, Mediazona<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mika\u0142aj Stankievi\u010d and his wife Viera are under arrest in Asipovi\u010dy, Mahilo\u016d region, on similar charges, MAYDAY.TEAM reported. Authorities also accused the woman of sharing opposition content and her husband, of “attacking a serviceman under the influence of Ukrainian propaganda.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darja S\u0107iebunova is on trial in Minsk on protest-related charges, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online content<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ta\u0107ciana Ravinskaja, Julija Arluk, Ihar \u0160y\u0142a\u016d, D\u017amitryj and Siarhiej Janu\u0161ka, Alena Karda\u0161, Natalla Pa\u016d\u0142o\u016dskaja and Julija Ramaniuk were tried in the Hrodna region for sharing opposition content, the Pravo Imeyut<\/em> Telegram channel said. The sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Smaktunovic, deported from Poland last month, had served a three-day jail term for a reaction on social media, Most <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro-government sources reported the arrest of a woman on suspicion that she administered a Belarusian community chat in Poland\u2019s Kalisz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities accused Ta\u0107ciana Franckievi\u010d and her sister Natalla \u0141abacevi\u010d of association with an extremist group, Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported. Both women were arrested on July 19 at Penal Colony No 11 in Va\u016dkavysk, Hrodna region, as they brought a parcel for Ta\u0107ciana\u2019s son Alaksandar, an anarchist activist serving a lengthy prison term in a politically-motivated case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiled journalist D\u017amitryj Pankaviec faces criminal charges after police searched his Belarusian home in the Minsk region, the Belarusian Association of Journalists said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two days ago, a judge in Salihorsk, Minsk region, opened proceedings against Andrej Pry\u0142ucki without the defendant being present. The man is accused of threatening police officers with violence, Viasna said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political prisoners were not allowed to attend an Orthodox liturgy at Hrodna’s Prison No 1, Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 26, human rights defenders identified at least 1,380 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
