July 24, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Maksim Hroma\u016d, Alaksiej Pa\u0161kievi\u010d, Alina Siviec and two others were arrested in Baranavi\u010dy, Brest region, for participating in 2020 postelection protests rallies, Mediazona<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other protest-related cases documented by the Viasna Human Rights Center on July 23 include a trial of IT professional Lizavieta Makrydzina arrested upon her return to Belarus from Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ivan Amrej\u010dyk, Vasil Niparka, Alaksiej Samajluk, Anatol Zakurka, Ihar Sarokin, Siarhiej Dzemidziuk, Mikita Jachimovi\u010d and Valancina \u017duko\u016dskaja are scheduled to go on trial in Brest later this month on similar charges, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a different case, businessman U\u0142adzimir Zachara\u016d went on trial in Viciebsk on charges of tax evasion and discrediting the state, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. The judge closed the proceedings to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historian Ihar Mielnika\u016d has been under arrest for about six months and may face criminal charges, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alena Hlabovi\u010d and Ja\u016dhien Karolka were tried in the Hrodna region for sharing opposition content, the Pravo Imeyut <\/em>Telegram channel said. The sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities filed criminal charges against three exiled social media specialists at zerkalo.io<\/em>, deemed an extremist group in Belarus, a pro-government source said. Police reportedly searched their parents’ homes and seized journalists’ property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Military analyst Jahor Lebiadok spent at least 10 days in a punishment cell at Penal Colony No 22 in Ivacevi\u010dy, Brest region, MAYDAY.TEAM reported. He is serving a five-year prison term on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities may have completed mental tests for jailed opposition activist Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk, her husband Andrej \u0160arenda said on Facebook. Her family members did not manage to bring her a parcel with food and medications. The woman’s current whereabouts remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 24, human rights defenders identified at least 1,368 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
