July 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the Viasna Human Rights Center have called on Belarus not to execute Rico Krieger, the German national whom the country sentenced to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna, which monitors capital punishment as part of the Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty campaign, said he is the first foreigner sentenced to death in Belarus since at least 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus is the only country in Europe to apply the death penalty, including for crimes such as terrorism and high treason, the organizations said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of gross human rights violations, many of which may amount to crimes against humanity, the use of the death penalty causes particular concern, the statement says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIDH and Viasna called on the Belarusian government to immediately stop the execution regardless of the charges and fully respect its international commitments, including the right to life, the right to freedom from torture and ill-treatment and the right to a defense and fair trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
