July 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The ban on entry of Belarus-registered cars adopted by the Baltic states last week would affect Belarusians\u2019 pro-European sentiment in the long term, Ale\u015b Alachnovi\u010d, an aide to opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja on economic reform, has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move plays into the hands of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s propaganda that tries to convince Belarusians that the West does not care about them and that Belarus can rely only on Russia, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ban is unlikely to affect foreign trade between Belarus and the EU as goods are mostly transported by trucks and rail, the expert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It \u201cappears particularly cynical” amid ongoing trade between EU and Russia’s businesses via Belarus, Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan, Alachnovi\u010d stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania announced the ban on entry of all Belarus-registered passenger cars regardless of the nationality of their owner or driver on July 17, one day before it entered into force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius cited the European Union Council regulation 2024\/1865 of June 29, noting that the move was coordinated with Latvia and Estonia that used the same regulation to ban entry of vehicles with Belarusian license plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
